Prolight undertook the lighting design and supply for the outdoor area of the Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation Museum in Pangrati, Athens, honoured with a Silver award at the Lighting Awards 2022 in the Exterior Lighting category.
The objective was a lighting scheme that enhances the landscape, ensures safety and comfort, and complements the museum’s architectural presence without competing with it.
Linear LED strips were integrated into corten recesses along the plaza’s elevation changes. Recessed wall lights frame the main staircase leading to the church, while in-ground spotlights illuminate the surrounding vegetation. A minimal number of 6-metre poles discreetly marks the museum’s entrance and the square. Two of these poles carry medium-beam projectors with glare-control flaps, providing subtle illumination to the adjacent church, without disturbing the nearby residences. At the side stairway, custom handrails with integrated LED lighting preserve unobstructed views toward the museum, by keeping fixtures out of sight.
All intensities and optics were calculated through detailed photometric simulations, achieving a result that is functional, discreet, and respectful of the museum’s nighttime presence.
