ON Residence Hotel occupies the carefully restored neoclassical structure of the former Olympos Naoussa restaurant on Thessaloniki’s seafront, a listed building extended with five contemporary floors. The project was awarded Silver at the Interiors Awards 2023 in the Lighting Design category. Following a design competition, Prolight developed a lighting concept that establishes a subtle dialogue between heritage and contemporary hospitality, using light as a unifying architectural layer.
The design strategy shifts intentionally between programmatic zones. In the lobby and restaurant, soft ambient illumination preserves the architectural character while ensuring visual comfort and material legibility. The bar introduces a more intimate, high-contrast atmosphere, where integrated back-bar lighting and rechargeable luminaires designed by Matteo Thun reinforce depth and rhythm. Guestrooms are composed as calm, adaptable environments, combining recessed downlights, indirect perimeter lighting, USB-enabled reading luminaires, and discreet courtesy lights for nocturnal orientation. Decorative brass and bronze fixtures introduce warmth and tactility without visual excess.
Bathrooms are defined by concealed linear lighting and IP44-rated bronze wall luminaires, ensuring both functionality and atmospheric continuity. Across all areas, CRI90+ LED sources were specified at 2700K and 3000K, calibrated according to materiality and use. A scene-based control system enables guests to transition seamlessly between task, relaxation, full, and night modes via intuitive keypads.
Photometric studies and full-scale mock-ups informed the final lighting scenes prior to construction. Throughout execution, the Prolight team maintained close on-site coordination, carefully respecting the limitations of the protected historic building.
